Iranian handwoven carpets are classified based on the region where the carpet is woven. For example, Tabriz carpets are those woven in the city of Tabriz or its vicinity. However, major carpet weaving centers like Tabriz have sub-branches as well. Each city, village, or tribe has its own unique design for carpet weaving, which is almost like a brand for that region. If a design becomes famous, other centers also try to imitate it, although a copy will never be equal to the original. Sometimes a carpet known by the name of a specific city is not woven there because the quality of the carpet is also a determining factor. For example, the delicate carpets woven in the holy city of Mashhad are often associated with Mashhad carpets, even though the city of Mood, where these carpets are woven, might be a small village near Mashhad, and not every carpet bearing the Mood name is necessarily woven in that village. Another classification method for carpets is based on the city where they are sold. For instance, Arak is a small city with one of the most famous carpet markets. Arak is surrounded by dozens of villages where carpet weaving is prevalent. Villagers send the woven carpets to Arak for sale, and thus, these carpets are referred to as Arak carpets. Similarly, Birjand is a city in South Khorasan Province, far from Mashhad, but some carpets with specific quality standards sold in Mashhad are called Birjand carpets. The classification system based on geographical region and carpet quality is used throughout Iran. The region of handwoven carpets affects the patterns and decorations of the carpets, the type of materials used, the type of knots, the quality of weaving, and carpet standards.
